Stephen Hopkins is a Partner, Senior Client Advisor, and the Chair of the Board of Managers at the firm. In his work with families, Stephen draws on his strategic planning skills, investment expertise and hands-on operating experience to help complex multigenerational families and related businesses achieve their goals.
Prior to joining Ballentine Partners in 2016, he was a founder and Vice Chairman of Roundtable Investment Partners. At Roundtable Investment Partners, Stephen served as Chief Operating Officer and Co-Head of the Investment team.
Previously, Stephen was Co-Head, President and Chief Operating Officer of Citigroup Asset Management, a global money management firm with over $400 billion in assets under management. He was a member of Citigroup’s Management Committee. Previously he served as head of Citigroup Private Bank Asset Management Group and led Global Product Management for The Citigroup Private Bank. In 2005, he led the sale of Citigroup Asset Management to Legg Mason, Inc. He subsequently joined Legg Mason, Inc. as a Senior Vice President with responsibility for a number of senior level integration initiatives.
Stephen was formerly Chief Operating Officer for Asset Management Services at JPMorgan. He joined the JPMorgan Private Bank to launch JPMorgan’s largest internet venture, Morgan OnLine, the first private bank/robo advisor on the web. Stephen was instrumental in the creation and development of Goldman Sachs Asset Management as a diversified global money management firm where he wrote the firm’s business plan, helped open offices around the world and served as its Chief Financial Officer. Previously he was a Senior Manager in the Capital Markets Practice, at Arthur Andersen & Co. where he helped found and build the mutual fund industry practice.
Stephen is currently an independent director of Fund Evaluation Group, an institutional investment consulting, portfolio management and research firm, and the National Philanthropic Trust, a public charity dedicated to providing philanthropic expertise to donors, foundations, and financial institutions. He is also a member of the Conservation Commission and Trustee of Trust Funds for the Town of Gilmanton.
Stephen graduated from the University of Rhode Island. He and his wife reside in Gilmanton, NH. Stephen is a skilled chef and an expert on fine wines and his wife, Judy, is a very serious gardener.
